WHO'S WHO - Character Profiles

After receiving many lovely communications from readers, I thought it would be helpful to put together some character lists for each book.  Nothing too complicated, perhaps a reference and a reminder.  Each character will be listed in the order of their appearance in the books. Bear with us as we upload these!

Her Baseborn Bridegroom

​

Mason (Sir Mason Vawdrey) – Male protagonist; large and muscular; dark, curly hair; gruff, recently elevated to a general in King’s army.  Illegitimate.  Very blunt and straight forward.

 

Sir Oswald Vawdrey – Soldier, Mason’s older legitimate half-brother, more cultured and polished.  Has political ambitions and very good manners.

 

Roland Vawdrey — Mason’s younger legitimate half-brother, still boyish and a little spoilt.

 

Lady Linnet Cadwallader — Heroine.  Heiress of Cadwallader Castle, green eyes, red hair, freckled, outspoken and innocent.  Has been treated as an invalid her whole life by her manipulative Aunt and Uncle who wanted to remain in control of her estate.

 

Cuthbert— Linnet’s young page boy and great favorite.

 

Sir Jevons — Linnet’s uncle, deceitful guardian who has been robbing his niece’s coffers for years.

 

Lady Millicent Jevons— Linnet’s deceitful maternal aunt, ran Cadwallader castle with Sir Jevons while Linnet was shut away in the tower.  A harpy.

 

Cecil Robards (Robards, Cecil) — Steward of Cadwallader Castle, older man, uptight but scrupulous.

 

Gertrude (Gertie) — A country servant at Cadwallader Castle.  Down to earth.

 

Mother Ames — Cuthbert’s grandmother, a healer and maker of potions, Linnet’s old friend and local wise woman.

 

King Wymer — The King of all Karadok now the war between north and south is over.

 

Baron Vawdrey — Mason’s father, booming and opinionated.

 

Sir Lambert Jauncey — Enid’s deceased husband, son of Lady Sybilla.

 

Lady Sybilla Jauncey — Neighbor to Cadwallader Castle, Enid’s mother-in-law, a busybody.

 

Enid Jauncey — Youthful Widowed wife of Lambert Jauncey, young, becomes Linnet’s friend.

 

Sir Chilton Jauncey — The surviving son of Lady Sybilla Jauncey, a well-dressed, courtly man.  Bit of a tease and a gossip.

 

Nan — Nervous, young maid at Cadwallader castle.

 

Lawton — Chilton Jauncey’s burly footman

 

Mr. Postner — Tailor, rather nervous of Mason.

 

Johnny Wickers — Landlord of inn called The Bear in town.  Has grievance against the Jevons treatment of his old Mum who used to work at the castle.

 

Sir Lang — Sixty years old, stout, leader of the Cadwallader guard.  Not easy in company of women.

 

Rolfe — One of Sir Lang’s guards.  Countrified.

 

Diggory — Groom who gives Linnet riding lessons.

 

Lady Doverdale — Prominent and formidable courtier at the King’s court who watches over Linnet.  Stern and powerful.

 

Meldon — Aged Vawdrey servant.  Crabby and rather vinegary.

 

Queen Armenal — King Wymer’s second wife, extremely clever and manipulative.  Loves being centre of attention.

 

Lord Schaeffer — An old and trusted advisor to the King involved in the inquiry into the possible annulment of the Vawdrey-Cadwallader marriage.  Eminently respectable.

 

Viscount Bardulf — An assassin working in the King’s court.  One of the Queen’s followers.  Very smooth and amused.  Wolf in sheep’s clothing.

 

Lady Mathilde Martindale — Lady Doverdale’s meek daughter.  Shy and timid.

 

Elise — One of Queen Armenal’s flighty ladies-in-waiting.

His Forsaken Bride

​

Oswald, Earl Vawdrey – Hero, 33 yrs.  King’s Chief advisor and spymaster.  Still waters run deep.  Very clever and cultured, discreet and reserved.  Recently granted an Earldom for services to Crown.  Unprepared for how marriage will turn his well-ordered life upside down.

​

Mason Vawdrey (Duke of Cadwallader) – Younger brother to Oswald recently elevated to Dukedom.  Very blunt and straight forward and rather gruff.

​​

Lady Linnet Vawdrey Duchess of Cadwallader – Sister-in-law to Oswald and Mason’s sweet wife.  Generally beloved by all Vawdreys.

​​

Archie Vawdrey – Strong willed infant son and heir of Mason and Linnet.  Red hair and strong lungs. 

​​

Margaret (Meg) Vawdrey – Elder of Mason and Linnet’s 3 year old black haired, green-eyed twin daughters.

​​

Lily Vawdrey – Younger of Mason and Linnet’s 3 year old twin daughters.  Shyer of two.

​​

Cuthbert Ames — Squire to Mason Vawdrey and great favourite with the family. 15 yrs.  His granny is a wise woman and he has inherited some gifts from her.

​​

Meldon — Aged Vawdrey servant.  Crabby and rather vinegary.

​​

Enid Jauncey — Youthful widow and neighbor of Cadwalladers, Linnet’s friend.

​​

Lady Fenella Countess Vawdrey (nee Thane nee Bernard) — Heroine, 26 years.  Was jilted by Oswald as a young girl and married to Sir Ambrose Thane for 8 yrs who now seeks a divorce.  She is a very well-meaning and sincere woman who has led a rather sheltered life in the country as a capable housewife.  She is ignorant of the ways of court and very aware of being a fish out of water there.  She feels out of depth in her new life and is over-awed by handsome, distinguished new husband.

Sir Ambrose Thane – Minor diplomat.  A petty and self-serving man who throws over his faithful wife for another.  Peevish, self-righteous and self-pitying. 

​​

Orla Thane - Sister to Sir Ambrose Thane.  Initially not supportive of her sister-in-law but becomes a staunch ally.  During her brother’s first marriage she vied with his wife for attention.  Changes stance as she dislikes his second wife.

​​

Lady Colleen Thane (nee Edland) — The shallow and spiteful second wife to Sir Ambrose.

​​

Baron Vawdrey — Oswald’s deceased father, very managing and opinionated in life.

​​

Sir Jeoffrey Bernard – Fenella’s late Father.

​​

Gilbert Bernard – Brother to Fenella.  Ill at ease at court and rather provincial.  Drinks too much.

​​

Bryce – Secretary to Oswald Vawdrey.  Efficient, prim and rather monk-like and disapproving of women.

​​

Edwards – Previous secretary to Oswald Vawdrey.  Dismissed in disgrace.

​​

King Wymer — The King of all Karadok now the war between north and south is over. House Argent.  Likes his own way.  Used to relying on Oswald.  Does not like to be troubled.

​​

Queen Armenal — King Wymer’s second wife, extremely clever and manipulative.  Loves being centre of attention. House Lisle.  Her Brother King Wilhelm of the Western Isles is often at odds with her husband.  Good at out-maneuvering her spouse.

​​

Viscount Bardulf — One of the Queen’s circle at court, from her homeland the Western Isles.  Very smooth and amused.  Wolf in sheep’s clothing, previously an assassin.

​​

Sir Phillip Cecil – Courtier and uncle to Helen and Jane.  Wishes to secure powerful alliances at court through their marriages

​​

Lady Helen Cecil – New addition at court.  Sensual beauty rumoured to be the King’s latest mistress.  She apparently demanded a titled husband before she will succumb to his seduction.

​​

Lady Jane Cecil – New addition at court.  Pale shadow of her more striking sister.  Very virtuous and serious-minded.

​​

Lord Andrew Schaeffer — An old and trusted advisor to the King.  Mentor to Oswald Vawdrey when he started his career.

​​

Lady Hester Schaeffer – Older female friend to Fenella at court.  Rather frivolous and smart.  Loves gossip.

​​

Sir Roland Vawdrey — Oswald’s youngest brother, King’s champion and popular young man about court, athletic and good looking.  Admires only superficial qualities in women. 

​​

Lady Anne Sumner  - Very refined courtier who is married to a much older husband.  She is a spy for the crown.  The Queen thinks her a bloodless beauty who would suit Oswald in marriage.

​​

Carleton – Scribe/ forgerer in shady corner of Aphrany.  Knows his customers by aliases including Oswald who he knows as Mr Rogers.  Reptilian in appearance.

​​

Sarah Yondy – Curvy widow that Gil Bernard pursues.  Not liked by other women in Sitchmarsh.

​​

Bathilde – The King’s trusted nurse who wakes him every morning and looks rather like a sheep.

​​

Signor Pezzini – court tailor with a strong foreign accent and exclusive clientel.

​​

Arnold Watkyns & wife – Quality hat makers.

​​

Anthonys of Aphrany – Highly skilled jeweler and his grandson.

​​

Trudy - God-daughter to Meldon and maidservant to Fenella.  City born and bred.  Married to a cooper with grown up children who are all apprenticed. 

​​

Jenny – Maid to Lady Sumner, lively, quick witted and also on Oswald’s payroll as a spy.

​​

Lady Eden Montmayne – Very cultured and sophisticated courtier who excels at dance and music. Great patron of the arts and favourite to the Queen. Very proper and prim.

​​

Dowager Viscountess Morpington – Sponsor of Cecil girls at court and overprotective mother to her son Rodrey, Viscount Morpington.

​​

Lady Bess Hartleby –Bluff and hearty heiress who loves her dogs and her falcon.  Plain of face and blunt of speech.  Somewhat eccentric and doesn’t fit in at court.

​​

Signor Arnotti - Portrait painter at court.  Extremely talented but lacking in social skills to deal with rich clients.  Brusque and ill-mannered.

​​

Lady Lenora Montmayne - Famous court beauty who is thought to be empty-headed and vacuous.  Cousin to Eden.  Not much apparent personality.

​​

John Entner - Playright and father of five.  Fenella becomes his patroness.

​​

Sir Edward “Ned” Bevan – Knight on tournament circuit.  Close friend to Roland Vawdrey.

​​

Sir James Attley - Knight on tournament circuit.  Close friend to Roland Vawdrey.

​​

McNee – Spy on Oswald Vawdrey’s payroll  (Other spies – Harris, Francis, Jeffries, Wheeler)

Princess Una  - Last of Blechmarsh line which has arguably a much stronger claim to the throne of Karadok than King Wymer.  The Princess was taken as prisoner when the North surrendered and has lived under house arrest ever since.  Many plots are hatched to sit her on the throne, but she just wants to live a quiet life.  King Wymer is tempted to execute her to put an end to the problem, but Oswald is strongly opposed to this.

​​

Lady Mathilde Martindale — Lady Doverdale’s meek daughter.  Shy and timid.  Expert needlewoman.  Secret friends with palace pages.  Every step is dogged by her childhood nurse.  Becomes a good friend to Fenella. 

​​

Lady Doverdale — Prominent and formidable courtier at the King’s court who watches over Linnet.  Stern and powerful.  “Mistress of the Queen’s Robes”.

​​

Lord Sutton – Member of King’s privy council

​​

Lord Caterby – Member of King’s privy council.  Rather snide and misogynistic.

​​

Sir Reginald de Bomfrey - Member of King’s privy council

Lord Lowan - member of King’s privy council

Sir Barrett Covington-Bart - Member of King’s privy council

Gertie — A country servant to Cadwalladers.  Down to earth.

An Ill-made Match

 

​

Roland Vawdrey – Hero.  Youngest Vawdrey brother, manly man.  Was his father’s favourite.  King’s champion, excels at jousting and tournaments.  Enjoys boisterous company of fellow knights and pretty women.  Is not a scholar and does not admire intellectual pursuits.

​

Sir Edward “Ned” Bevan – Knight on tournament circuit.  Close friend to Roland Vawdrey.

​​

Eden Vawdrey (nee Montmayne) – Heroine.  Sophisticated and cultured courtier who excels at music and dance.  Patroness of the arts, moves in intellectual circles. 

​​

Lenora Montmayne – Famous court beauty who is thought to be empty-headed and vacuous.  Lenora herself even believes herself to be lazy and not very fond of people.  She admires her cousin Eden and wishes she was more like her, but thinks it is too late for self-improvement as she squandered her opportunities.  She does not care for the attention of her admirers particularly any that are young and amorous.

Oswald, Earl Vawdrey – Oldest brother to Roland.  Very powerful member of King’s court.  Chief advisor and spy master.  Oswald is devious and clever but fond of his family and uses his powers for good.  He is smoothly spoken, still waters run deep.

​​

Cuthbert Ames –  Youthful squire to Roland Vawdrey.  Raised in country and a bit of a rascal.  Does as he pleases.  His grandmother is a wise woman.

​​

Hannah - Maid to Lenora and Eden Montmayne.

​​

Lady Dorothea Montmayne – Grandmother to Eden and Lenora.  Level-headed and rather dry older lady.  She does care for her grand-daughters although she thinks her sons are fools.  Eden takes after her in being clever and opinionated.

​​

Sir Leofric Montmayne – Uncle and guardian of Eden and father to Lenora.  Master at Hallam Hall and courtier.  treats Eden as though she is a paid companion of his daughter.  Gave her a home in the understanding that she make herself useful.  He feels very hard done by when his attempt to betroth his daughter to youngest Vawdrey does not come off.

Mason Vawdrey (Duke of Cadwallader) – Older brother to Roland.  Very blunt and straight forward and rather gruff.  Father of three.

​​

Sir Christopher Montmayne – Eden’s least favourite uncle.  His son Christopher is the heir to the title.  Peevish, pompous and judgmental.

Landlord of provincial inn.  Country bred.

Landlord’s wife – Hearty and provincial.

​​

Sir Edward “Ned” Bevan - Knight on tournament circuit.  Close friend to Roland Vawdrey.

Sir James Attley - Knight on tournament circuit.  Close friend to Roland Vawdrey.

Sir Aubron Payne – Obscure rural knight who lives at Tranton Vale.

​​

Lady Elizabeth Payne – Much younger wife of Sir Aubron.  Flirtatious.

Gunnilde Payne – Good-hearted 18 year old daughter of Sir Aubron.  Disappointed in love fanciful, fond of jousting and romance.  Becomes a close friend of Eden’s.

​​

Harold “Hal” Payne – Plain spoken young son of Sir Aubron.  14 years.  Fond of sweets and pastries.  Develops a small crush on Eden.

​​

Sir Arthur Conway – Neighbour to the Paynes.  Nicest of the Conways.  Likes Gunnilde Payne but not enough to stand up to his harpy of a mother.

​​

Lady Conway – Neighbor to the Paynes at Tranton Vale.  Stuck up woman, rather haughty.

​​

Sir Christopher Lelland – Courtier, usher in King’s retinue, lately married to Muriel Conway.

​​

Muriel Lelland nee Conway – Former friend of Gunnilde Payne, but now thinks herself too grand for her company.  Rather shrill and shallow.

​

Lord Kentigern – Northern lord, lately joined tournament circuit.  Very ferocious in the field and freakishly strong with one blind eye and a scarred face.

​​

Sir Jeffree de Crecy – Strong competitor in tournament field.  Rather arrogant.

​​

Sir Renlowe d’Avenant – Brave to a fault, yet frequent loser at tournaments.  Described by Roland as utterly fearless.

​​

Martha – Servant of Payne household.  Countrified and helpful.

​​

Fulco – Servant at Vawdrey Keep since he was a boy.  Burly giant, still under his mother’s thumb.  Ill at ease around pretty women.

​​

Baxter – Curmudgeonly old cook at Vawdrey Keep.  Woman-hater and extremely superstitious.  Believes in the old country ways and believes in the faery-folk.

​​

Brigid Hamble – Young widow and maidservant at Vawdrey Keep.  Lively wit and an outsider to Sitchmarsh as she is town bred.  Clashes with Fulco as they fight a mutual attraction.

​​

Lady Orla Bernard (nee Thane) – Connection to Vawdrey family and neighbor.  Rather opinionated and eccentric.  Lives with her husband at Sitchmarsh Hall. 

​​

Sir Palmerston du Very – World weary member of the King’s Guard.  Seen it all before. 

​​

Sir Symond Chevenix – Eager young member of the King’s Guard, rather over-zealous in his duties.

​​

Lady Jane Cecil – Member of the Queen’s ladies in waiting and new favourite, replacing Eden.  Quiet and discreet.

​​

Queen Armenal – Clever manipulator, fond of entertainment and attention which she usually derives from courtiers.  Not pleased about her former favourite Eden’s marriage.  Can be kind.

​​

Fenella, Countess Vawdrey – Kindly and sweet wife of Oswald Vawdrey and proud mother of twin boys.

​​

Linnet, Duchess of Cadwallader – Beloved and devoted wife of Mason Vawdrey and mother of three children.

​​

Meldon – Crotchety old servant to Vawdreys.

​​

King Wymer – Strong-willed king of Karadok.  Does not like having his will crossed or being co-erced into things he does not want to do.

​​

Bryce – Austere assistant to Lord Oswald Vawdrey. 

​​

Mr R Lewen – Emotional poet disappointed by his patroness the Duchess of Rand.

Wed By Proxy

Lady Mathilde Martindale — 24 year old courtier.  Raised to be obedient, subservient to her parents will and timid.  Expert needlewoman.  Secret friends with palace pages who teach her things about life that her upbringing has not.  Married three times yet has never left her Mother’s side.  Longs for another kind of life.

 

Willard ‘Will’ Peyton -  Page at royal court.  One of four 13 year old pages who are Mathilde’s secret allies at court and facilitate her flight.  Willard’s uncle is the Bishop of Hudde.

 

Robin ‘Rob’ Geddings - Robin is a page at royal court and he along with Countess Vawdrey are Mathilde’s best friends in all the world.  Rob accompanies Mathilde into the North.  Rob is a second son who has been appointed squire to an elderly knight, Sir Avery.  He is very fond of animals and considers himself Mathilde’s protector.  Rob has plenty about him and is very capable.

 

Piers Winstanley - Page at royal court.  One of four 13 year old pages who are Mathilde’s secret allies at court and facilitate her flight. 

 

Gordon Fairfax – Page at royal court.  One of four 13 year old pages who are Mathilde’s secret allies at court and facilitate her flight. 

 

Sir Edgar Hill – Courtier and heir to Viscount Woodcote. Slightly drunk wooer of Lady Elizabeth.

​

Lady Doverdale — Prominent and formidable courtier at court - “Mistress of the Queen’s Robes”.  Stern and powerful mother to Mathilde.  Has not encouraged independence in her daughter but has instead maneuvered her through three political marriages while keeping her daughter firmly under her influence.

​

Nurse – ‘Dear old thing’, blind as a bat who has dogged Mathilde’s every step since childhood.  Nurse is over-protective and raised Mathilde with morality stories about good girls who never stray from the path.

​

Guy Randall - 31 years old, Marquis of Martindale – Master of Acton March a Northern estate.  Part of the northern forces that lost to King Wymer in Karadok’s ten year civil war.  The conditions of his release from prison was to swear fealty to the Argent King, hand over half of his wealth and marry Mathilde.  In the four years since that took place, he has grown increasingly bitter.  Getting a reputation as a ‘woman hater’.  Gruff and a bit of a bear of a man, large and imposing.  His emotions have been locked away for many years as so much was taken from him during the war.  Mathilde’s appearance unlocks strong feelings/ response from the first.

​

Firmin – Steward at Acton March and Guy’s right hand man.  Older than Guy, he served Guy’s father before him.  They fought together side by side in the late war.  Firmin is initially disapproving and hostile toward Mathilde who he is sure is an imposter.  He also espouses the Kerslakes as believes them to be loyal northerners.  His nose is put out of joint by Mathilde’s appearance.  Guy does not take him to the lodge and instead takes Waldon and Temur as they are more accepting of Mathilde.  This hurts Firmin’s feelings.

​

Waldon – Trusted retainer at Acton March and trusted man of Guy.  Mid-thirties.  He likes Mathilde from the outset and starts courting Mathilde’s maid Prudie in secret at the Hunting Lodge.

​

Temur – Young distant cousin of Guy’s and one of his trusted men, newlywed to his wife Lettys.  Temur is astonished by the changes in Guy when Mathilde comes into his life.  He accepts Mathilde in Guy’s life without question.

​

Old Helga – Wise woman/ witch who lives in the woods on Guy’s estate.  She was a prominent figure in Guy’s Father’s day, but her premonitions for the future saw her banished from the hall.  Rumor is she said the Martindale’s cause would fail along with the Blechmarsh (northern royals) line.

​

Bogdon – Household servant at Acton March

Jankin – Household servant at Acton March

​

Beadles – Watchmen who patrol the streets in Wickhamford, dealing with law breakers and keeping the peace.

​

Bernard Thurston – Wealthy merchant from Wickhamford who performs civic duties as parish officer.

​

Thurston younger - Wealthy merchant’s son who performs civic duties as parish officer.  He is very amused to find out that the young lad charged with horse stealing is in fact a woman in disguise.

​

Princess Una Blechmarsh – Northern princess now a prisoner of King Wymer and living under house arrest in the south.

​

Julia Allworthy nee Kerslake – Guy’s first love.  They were betrothed at eighteen, but it was broken off five years later due to the war.  Haughty beauty who likes to think herself a tragic figure after marrying her much older husband Sir Cecil Allworthy and moving to the south.  Julia is very theatrical and nostalgic about her northern upbringing.  Julia insists on being the center of attention and does not get on well with other women.  She likes to imagine Guy is broken hearted over her and is not happy to see he has moved on.

​

Miles Kerslake – Guy’s best friend and neighbor who died in the war.  His seat Kerslake castle was razed to the ground during the fighting.

​

Tristan Kerslake – Younger brother of Miles and Julia.  It is rumored he is a spy for the North, but actually he is a double agent and plays both sides off.  Amoral and ruthless though very charming.  

​

Prudence “Prudie” Eddard – 30 yrs, sharp-tongued and opinionated servant, dismissed from Acton March, but then employed for the hunting lodge.  She and Waldon become handfasted and she becomes fiercely loyal to Mathilde over time. 

​

Earl of Strethneal – Neighbor of Guy’s who acts as host some years to the Kerslakes on their annual pilgrimage north.

​

Countess of Strethneal – Northern nobility with an estate near to Acton March.  She does not like Julia Kerslake who has outstayed her welcome on previous visits with them.

​

Lettys – New wife of Temur.  Tasked by Guy to act as chaperone to Julia Kerslake during her stay at Acton March.  Lettys is a very practical young woman, country born and bred and very interested in Mathilde.

​

The Unlovely Bride

Lenora Montmayne - Famous court beauty who is thought to be empty-headed and vacuous.  Lenora herself even believes herself to be lazy and not very fond of people.  She does not care for the attention of her admirers particularly any that are young and amorous.  After a serious illness, Lenora determines to improve her character and carve a life for herself away from court with a husband who has not married her in pity.  The story is her voyage of self-discovery.  Underneath her seeming shallowness, Lenora has plenty of charm, bravery and character.  She just needed a challenging life opportunity to bring it out.

 

Sir Leofric Montmayne – Courtier and father to Lenora.  Master at Hallam Hall.  Feels sorry for himself a lot of the time and harried by his domineering Mother and a malingering wife.  He is fond of Lenora in his own way but is rather selfish with no self awareness.  He has no son to inherit his seat. 

​

Lady Gwenda Montmayne – Hypochondriac.  Disappointed beauty who has grown stout and disillusioned in her old age.  Somewhat jealous of her beautiful daughter.  Refuses to accompany her husband to court, but instead stays at Hallam Hall and takes to her bed with various ailments.

​

Hannah – personal maid to Lenora

​

Berta – sour and sarcastic old woman who resembles a gallows hag, and lays out the dead for a living as well as acting as a laundress.   Berta is resentful about her sons leaving her to her miserable fate grubbing for a living in dire circumstances.  She becomes Lenora’s trusted servant.

​

Sir Garman Orde – Surly, brutish and unpopular knight who competes on the tournament circuit.  Lenora propositions him to elope with her.  Garman is friendless (apart from his childhood friends the Hainfroys) and solitary.  He keeps his own company.  Garman is resentful of his family.  Orphaned at an early age, he has a secret plan for revenge against his paternal grandfather the Earl of Twyford who rejected his Father for marrying his mother.  Garman intends to let Twyford Castle rot to the ground and throw his cousins out into the street once his grandfather to whom he is heir, dies.

​

Father Udolphus – Cleric who performs the marriage ceremony for Garman and Lenora.  He appears at first to be a humble hedge hermit, dwelling at a roadside shrine, but later is revealed to be the head abbot from Priors Norton which matches his glacial, cutting manner much better.  Father Udolphus takes an instant dislike to Garman who he believes is a seducer of Lenora’s virtue.

​

Huw Hainfroy – Oldest son of Sir Bernhard who Garman was squire to.  Garman considers the Hainfroy brothers to be his own kinsmen as fought side by side in the late civil war.  They disowned their sister when she refused to marry Garman in accordance with their late father’s wishes. 

​

Ivo Hainfroy – Youngest son of Sir Bernhard and sworn brother to Garman.  Ivo was scarred in the late war and lives a ramshackle existent with his brother at Cofton Grange, shunning the company of others.  The brothers care for their destriers but are not good at running their estate.

​

Martha – Disobliging country maid who is the Hainfroys only domestic servant.   It is likely that Martha is warming one or both of the brothers beds.

​

Gerard Sutton – Maternal grandfather of Garman Orde.  He runs Matchings farm which Garman inherited from his father.  Very conscientious and polite man and very competent.  Former steward at Twyford castle.  He was forced out when his daughter Anne eloped with Garman’s father against the wishes of his family.  He is too polite with Garman as he is very conscious of their difference in station which has impeded the bond that should exist between them. 

​

Hawise – Servant of Matchings Farm.  Comfortable country woman who is content with her role in life with her loving family around her.  Her lot in life contrasts with Berta’s.

​

Cuthbert Ames – 15 years old, youthful squire to Roland Vawdrey.  Raised in country and a bit of a rascal.  Does as he pleases.  His grandmother is a wise woman and Cuthbert possesses gifts too.  Other squires call him ‘witches brat’ and resent his connections to a powerful family at court. Kit and Hal are his trusted fellow squires at court.

​

Christopher ‘Kit’ Montmayne – Young fifteen year old heir to Hallam Hall and cousin to Lenora and Eden.  Kit is impetuous and hot-headed, he will always speak his mind.  Bosom friend of Cuthbert and Hal.  He starts out as squire to Sir Lionel, but after parting company he becomes squire to Sir Garman Orde.  Kit does not get along with his father Sir Christopher Montmayne.

​

Harold “Hal” Payne – Down to earth son of Sir Aubron.  15 years.  Fond of sweets and pastries and the company of women.  Hal is a budding wooer already.  He is squire to Sir James Attley, friend of Roland Vawdrey and a staunch friend to Kit and Cuthbert.

​

Sir Lionel Emworth – One of Lenora’s most devoted suitors.  Her grandmother and father considered asking him to marry her after her illness.  Although he enjoys the role of a parfait and chivalrous knight, in private company Sir Lionel likes dallying with serving maids and is not so honorable.  His romantic notions re: Lenora surprisingly do persist after her loss of beauty.

​

Sir Roger Kellingford – Host of tournament held on his property.  Elderly and countrified knight.  His family is rather convoluted.  His stepsister Beatrix lives with him and his heir, a nephew Edward Chatton.  He has two illegitimate sons who he favors.

​

Lady Brigitte Kellingford – Stepsister of Sir Roger.  Rather boisterous and loud.  She has no tact but is quite kindly if alarming company for you never know what she will say next.

​

Eden Vawdrey (nee Montmayne) – Cousin to Lenora and role model.  Sophisticated and cultured courtier who excels at music and dance.  Patroness of the arts, moves in intellectual circles and married to the famous Sir Roland.  Lenora and Eden consider each other as sisters and support one another.  Eden is expecting her first child. 

​

Roland Vawdrey –King’s champion, excels at jousting and tournaments.  Enjoys boisterous company of fellow knights and devoted to his wife Eden, despite the fact he is no scholar and does not admire intellectual pursuits.

​

Lord Kentigern – Northern lord. Very ferocious in the field and freakishly strong with one blind eye and a scarred face.

​

Sir Jeffree de Crecy – Strong competitor in tournament field.  Rather arrogant.

​

Sir Renlowe d’Avenant – Brave to a fault, yet frequent loser at tournaments.  Described by Roland as utterly fearless, Renlowe is poor as a church mouse and a second son.

Ada – Country servant at Matchings Farm.

​

Johnny – Country servant and grandson to Hawise.  Amiable and a bit shy.

​

Margery – Young servant girl at Matchings Farm.

Magda Orde – First cousin to Garman Orde.  Magda is proud, but forced to live in straitened conditions at Twyford Castle.  She carries a secret torch for Ivo Hainfroy who kissed her in her girlhood before she became a practical prisoner of her social position and poverty.

Jarin Orde, Earl of Twyford – Paternal Grandfather to Garman Orde.  Jarin is a proud and bitter old man of spiky disposition with regrets about casting off his eldest son Merek and refusing to acknowledge Garman as his heir.  Now the boy has grown it is he who refuses to acknowledge the connection and this pains his grandfather whose only real love is his estate.   Jarin has lived a rather dissolute life though he has been in seclusion with poor health in his old age.  He is unkind if not downright cruel toward his daughter-in-law and the granddaughters who are under his power.

​

Jehanne Orde – Haughty heiress of fifty years who was married to the earl’s younger son Rulf Orde.  Originally intended for the eldest son who eloped with Anne Sutton.  Her fortune has been squandered on the upkeep of the castle and her relations with her father-in-law are hostile.  On his death she runs off to marry Sir Walter Dalton, leaving her daughters to their fate.

​

Agnes Orde – Younger sister to Magda and second daughter of Rulf Orde.  Agnes is lame and uses a crutch.  She is not so loyal to their haughty mother as Magda and has a noisy little dog called Gorvenal that she is devoted to and has to keep hidden in the stable as her grandfather will not permit her to keep a pet.

Lady Dorothea Montmayne – Grandmother to Eden and Lenora.  Level-headed and rather dry older lady.  She does care for her grand-daughters although she thinks her sons are fools.  Both Eden and Lenora take after her in that they have quick minds and strong wills.

Sir Armand de Bussell – Roguish knight who fights for profit and not honor.  Armand has made a career out of throwing fights on the tournament circuit and playing the odds to make the best purse.  Armand avoids his family, pleasing himself in pursuit of fortune and pleasure.  He has never cared for the opinion of his fellow knights or his family.

 

Sir Douglas Farleigh – Inexperienced knight.  Unpopular with the crowd due to obscurity.

 

King Wymer — The King of all Karadok now the war between North and South is over.  House Argent.  Likes his own way.  Used to relying on his chief adviser, the King does not like to be troubled or to have to do unpleasant tasks.  Hates having his will crossed, Wymer has his favorites among the courtiers.

 

Queen Armenal — King Wymer’s second wife, extremely clever and manipulative.  Loves being center of attention. House Lisle.  Her Brother King Wilhelm of the Western Isles is often at odds with her husband.  Good at out-maneuvering her spouse.

 

Princess Una Blechmarsh – Una is the sole legitimate heir to the House of Blechmarsh which was once the royal family of Karadok.  Then they were pushed into the North by the Argents and became the Northern power but several years ago their forces were defeated by King Wymer’s Southern forces in a civil bloody war.  Una has been under house arrest ever since under a possible death sentence.  Northern propaganda had it that Una was fierce and warlike, but in truth she is neither of those things.  Her Father was a tyrant and she bore no love for him.  She longs for an obscure and peaceful life away from royal intrigues and court gossip.

 

Otho Fitzwilliam – Bastard born brother to Una.  Otho’s mother was a servant and he was squired out to a knight on her death.  He was only brought to Northern court on feast days but he was the closest to Una of all her four illegitimate brothers.  Otho is gruff, stubborn and loyal with a stern and dutiful outlook in life.  He finds it hard to view his sister in her new life but is determined to support her.

 

Oswald, Earl Vawdrey – Very powerful presence at court.  Possibly the true power.  King’s Chief advisor and spymaster.  Still waters run deep.  Nothing happens at court without his say so.  Oswald is unfailing mild and polite in speech but has few intimates who know the true workings of his devious mind. 

 

Robkin – The King’s court jester.  A very impudent fellow permitted to insult nobles to their face without consequence.

 

Lady Jane Cecil – Queen’s current favorite lady in waiting.  Very virtuous and serious-minded.

 

Fenella, Countess Vawdrey – Kindly and sweet wife of Oswald Vawdrey, she does not fit the court ideal of beauty or sophistication but to everyone’s astonishment her husband is devoted to her.

 

Bryce – Earl Vawdrey’s right hand man.  Rather pompous and officious in his manner it takes him a while to warm up to people.  Bryce is something of a jobsworth and devoted to Lord Vawdrey.

 

The landlord of the Red Hind – Cheerful and jovial character.

 

The landlord, groom, cook and maid of the Merry Wayfarer – Villainous band of murderers and thieves operating the public house as a front for their crimes.

 

Rose Challocombe - beauteous and fey-like maidservant of 22 yrs at Lynwode.  She stepped into the housekeeper role on the death of her grandmother, but is frankly hopeless in the task.  Rose would spend her time daydreaming and singing and picking flowers if left to her own devices.  She has a good heart and loves animals but was raised to be a rich old woman’s companion so she lacks the knowledge or interest in running a household and has several ladylike accomplishments, such as harp playing.

 

Janet – Down to earth and outspoken servant at Lynwode. Daughter of a miller.

 

Peter – A strapping laborer and servant at Lywnode.  A shy lad, country born and raised.

 

Mr Beverley – The cook at Lynwode.  A reformed drunkard who used to own his own bakery.

 

Mrs Brickenden – Housekeeper at Lynwode.  Una finds her hard to warm to initially as she believes in preserving distinction of rank, but when she unbends she shows good common sense.

 

Sir Hugo de Bussell – Armand’s father.  A rather distant and cold man who never relished his role as head of a family and took small interest in his offspring.

 

Henry de Bussell – Armand’s older brother who is the heir to Anninghurst.  Henry is cautious and parsimonious and rather ‘old womanish’.  He never seemed young to Armand and always applied himself sincerely to his studies of books and instruments.

 

Roger de Bussell – Younger brother of Armand.  Intended for the religious life, Roger has recently changed his mind about his path in life.  Due to the fact he was studying to enter a seminary he is awkward around women though he is very keen to acquaint himself with them.

 

Muriel de Bussell – Wife of Roger.  She is a very thrifty and opinionated woman and rather older than her husband.  She was married before and brought a substantial dowry to her younger husband though she has born him no children.

 

Anne Buxton – Armand’s twin sister.  Mother of two and married to a gentleman farmer.  Anne is headstrong and does not hold back what she thinks.

 

Joan Buxton – Seven year old niece of Armand’s.

 

Toby Buxton – Two year old nephew to Armand.

John Buxton – Husband to Armand’s sister Anne.  John is a wealthy farmer.

​

Fulcher – Disreputable acquaintance of dubious origin and former business partner of Armand’s.  Fulcher is very enterprising and money oriented without much loyalty but for all that Armand is fond of him as they traveled together for several years and had some good times.  Fulcher is a useful man to know.

​

Walker – An agent of Lord Vawdrey’s.  A very capable ex-soldier sent to watch over Una and Armand.

​

Waleran Kimarne – Younger half-brother to Una.  Waleran’s mother was a noblewoman but his Father never married her which meant he was illegitimate.  Waleran was raised by his mother’s people and indulged.  At the battle of Demoyne he received a grievous head wound which altered his former personality and unbalanced him.  After he had recovered he saw his family as traitors for surrendering to the south and sought to ‘free’ Una by killing her in a murder-suicide pact.

Gerold Ankatel – The richest merchant in Karadok.  Gerold dealt primarily importing spices from Samare, mapping out trade routes to Karadok and the Western Isles and then branching out.  He is now so rich he lends money to the Crown itself.

 

Ursula Ankatel – Eldest daughter (27 yrs) of Gerold Ankatel.  Ursula is dutiful, cautious, quiet and a little timid.  Ursa (shortened family name) is very conscious of her origins.  Ursula is used to putting others first.

 

Sir Renlowe d’Avenant – Brave and penniless young knight of 22 yrs.  Believes in chivalry and honor.

 

Konrad Bartree, Baron Kentigern - Northern lord, competitor in tournaments.  Very ferocious in the field and freakishly strong with one blind eye and a scarred face.  Lord Kentigern lost his lands after fighting on the losing side in Karadok’s war.  He is a solitary and moody figure who lacks social skills. 31 yrs old.

 

Jakeman – Baron Kentigern’s capable and obliging manservant.  Jakeman served on the opposite side to Lord Kentigern in the war, but this is not held against him.

 

Johnson, landlord of the Jennet Tree Inn-keeper.

 

Bryce – Earl Vawdrey’s right hand man.  Rather pompous and officious in his manner it takes him a while to warm up to people.  Bryce is something of a jobsworth and devoted to Lord Vawdrey.

 

Burchard – Stately manservant now employed by the Ankatels.  Burchard has a very grand manner as was previously employed by the tutor of a prince.

 

Magnatrude Bartree – Sister to Lord Kentigern.  Magnetrude (known as Trude by her family, pronounced Tru-der to rhyme with tudor) is a haughty and embittered older woman, with a proud, disagreeable manner.  In her life Magnatrude has been through a lot, being jilted and then having to live an impoverished life in the lodge house of her former home.

 

Fredagunde Bartree – Cousin to Lord Kentigern, Freda (as she is known by her family) acts as companion to Magnatrude.  Freda is a fluttery, nervous type who is anxious to please and very kind, though she is rather intimidated by both her cousins.

 

Willard Hemmings – Merchant and former would-be suitor to Ursula who was rejected.

 

Elspeth Hemmings – Scheming widow, who has an eye on Gerold Ankatel.

 

Golda – Servant first of the Ankatel household and then of Aimee’s.  Golda is extremely efficient and shrewd.  She is also quick to join any quarrel in her mistress’s corner.

 

Hilda – Former servant of Aimee and Ursula’s mother.  Hilda is a bit too sympathetic of Ursula’s nerves.  An overprotective, mother hen type of figure.

 

Unwin – Chronically shy young servant lad of Aimee’s household.  Unwin prefers not to speak at all if possible.  Initially Aimee is told he is nephew to her father’s groom, but he turns out to be Golda’s son born out of wedlock.

 

Ingrid – Cantankerous old servant woman from the Kentigern estate.  Ingrid is country bred and does not stand on ceremony.

 

Matthews – Capable and down to earth manservant hired for Aimee and Konrad by Gerold Ankatel.

 

Sir Douglas Farleigh – Young knight who admires Sir Kentigern greatly and wants to befriend him.  Sir Douglas is a likeable with many friends, he is however, unlucky in love and clueless about women.

 

The Marquess of Martindale – Gruff northerner, devoted to his wife.

 

The Marchioness of Martindale – Charming wife to the above.  Kindly and loveable.

 

Countess of Strethneal – Northern noblewoman, a little stuck up.

Lady Eden Vawdrey – Wife to Roland, Eden is a sophisticated and cultured courtier who fully supports her spouse in his knightly pursuits.  She is newly a mother.

 

Lady Jane Cecil – Favourite of the Queen.  Discreet, and a little colourless lady in waiting.

 

Blyfield – A craftsman of some repute - jeweler and goldsmith with an establishment in Bulwark lane.

Lady Howard – Widow and matriarch.  Her husband set up the tournament of Beres Caple.  Lady Howard now runs it with her two sons.
